Ever feel like you were stuck in a rut?
In the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray), wakes up to the same day over and over and over… forcing him to relive February 2nd (actual Groundhog Day).
Phil was your typical arrogant, self-centered, egotistical weatherman, that didn’t care about anyone but himself.
Movie lesson…
When we put the needs of others above our own selfish desires, we’ll find Happiness.
Ever wake up to (what feels like) the same day over and over and over… like you’re going nowhere? It’s likely you are stuck… in the rut of life. Know anyone like that, stuck in their own rut, repeating life’s lessons?
Definition of ‘Being in a RUT’
A habit or pattern of behavior that has become dull and unproductive but is hard to change.
Groundhog Day Mental Loops are created by:
1. Listening to Toxic Co-workers complain
Nothing worse than showing up to work happy, ready to do your job, when you get stopped in your tracks by the Angry person. This Toxic Employee loves to cause commotion around the water cooler, and will bring problems to anyone else who will listen. They are often known as the workplace bully. 2. Making bad choices
Some of your choices are easy, others can be hard. Some choices could determine your personal safety, or the safety of others. Other choices you make can determine a positive impact on your career, or career-ending. Read more on bad choices
3. Vital Signs and Emotional Intelligence – (blaming others)
If your job is keeping you up at night, makes you feel irritated, or causes you to have severe health issues, any one of your vital signs could and probably will spike. That’s the bodies alarm, warning us that we need to change something… Read more on Vital Signs
4. ‘I am Fine’ – PTSD & Cumulative Career Trauma
If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “I’m not okay” or “I am not as fine as I tell people,” or “This job is killing me” then you might be reaching the tipping point of Cumulative Career Trauma. Read more on PTSD
Wake up everyday believing something good will happen.
Wake up, Look around you!
If you are sleep walking thru life, you could miss critical components of your job, or miss when your partner goes in Block-out. You may even have to step-in, tap-out, take-over for them, to stop them from making a serious mistake. Wake up, pay attention, because there may come a time when you need to step in as you have a Duty to Intervene when necessary.
You may become so overwhelmed in this rut, spiraling downward, resulting in harm to yourself, or make a career-ending move. If you feel like you are trapped in a rut and you can’t escape, then this may be a critical sign to seek assistance as you may be experiencing Critical Cumulative Trauma.
