P&G writes this message on their YouTube page that is worth sharing…
When the world sees differences, a mom sees boundless potential. Just imagine what the world could be if we all saw each other through a mom’s loving eyes. Thank you, Mom.
At P&G we aspire to a world where everyone is equally free to pursue their dreams, no matter who you are, where you come from, who you love, or how you worship. We’re using our voice as an Olympic Games sponsor to celebrate a mom’s role in helping her kids overcome bias and seeing their potential no matter what others see. Just imagine what the world could be if we all saw each other through a mom’s eyes.
Ellyn Shook’s Zero Tolerance brings workplace bias to light…
The facts are staggering. 33 million women in the U.S. have been sexually harassed in work-related situations, according to a recent ABC News-Washington Post poll.
The hashtag #MeToo had been shared more in one day than any other feminist hashtags in an entire year … with over a million shares on Twitter in a 48-hour period and 12 million in a 24-hour period on Facebook.
Over 70% of sexual harassment claims go unreported, mainly due to shame and fear of retaliation.
Proactive vs Reactive – Bias-free vs Biased-based
We are seeing more employers in reactive mode for workplace bias these days, than proactive ones. Becoming bias-free takes work on everyones part. Keep doing what you do, or change with the times. These times have to change.
Royal Bank of Canada started an effort in May 2013 to raise awareness of bias among its 78,000 employees worldwide. Dr. Mahzarin Banaji, a Harvard University social ethics professor who co-authored Blind Spot: The Hidden Biases of Good People, has held sessions for about 1,000 of RBC’s executives to help alert them of their biases.
Google’s disclosure in 2014 that it has a 70% male workforce and its public effort to address that “deserves recognition,” says Ross.

Proactive companies need to incorporate a ‘Positive Message’ to prevent workplace and sexual Harassment from happening. If harassment should occur, the HR department should be an open-door to report any misconduct.
Here are (3) keys to a Zero Tolerance workplace:
- Open REPORTING – Reinforcing that when an employee reports sexual harassment or unprofessional behavior in the workplace that they are ‘Doing the Right Thing’ by company standards. “It’s okay to report misconduct here.”
- Improved TRAINING – Conduct fun, motivating training on Emotional Intelligence. Help employees learn how their emotions effect themselves and others. Use the RITE training to improve a bias-free environment for everyone, top to bottom.
- Caring CULTURE – Have a corporate-wide message like the RITE Approach of ‘Doing the RIGHT Thing Today.’ Communicate a company-wide positive message that your company is taking a hard ethical stand towards an open bias-free and safe environment for all employees. A caring culture says, “We care about all of you!”
