Value of a Butterfly Effect
Think back to your childhood, or your schooling years, or early in your career. Did others treat you in a way that made you feel good or bad? And if they treated you badly, did you pass that same treatment on to others? If so, you created a negative Butterfly Effect.
If someone were to ask you later in life What Value did you offer (or taken away from) the public service profession what would you say?
Your VALUE becomes your life-story. How you make a difference for yourself, the profession, and within the community you serve becomes your story.
“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”
~Albert Einstein
Ask Yourself this… Do you ‘Value’ you?
Three (3) questions to ask Yourself on Value:
- Do you waste time listening to toxic employees, or are You that toxic employee that finds fault in everything?
- Do you have personal goals on what You want to achieve in life?
- Are you a mentor to others, helping the agency build morale… or are you bringing it down?
We recently taught a Leadership and Trainer’s Class in Worcester, Massachusetts. Typically in the beginning of class, most are thinking, “this will be just another brow-beating class that offers zero Value.” Until they realize what the officer below realized… “THIS is about ME, and I need to VALUE Me in a different way”. Watch and Share…
VALUE means a person’s principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life.
For you to help others as a public servant, and bring value to your community, you must first know your own personal VALUES of what is important within yourself.
As part of improving Your own wellness, you must take time to self-reflect on these (3) valued components.
- How do you value yourself?
- Are you cognizant of your time?
- Are you aware of your actions at work and home?
Understanding the (3) CORE VALUES below, can help you identify what may be important to defining your own CORE VALUES.
- Character Values
Character values are the universal values that you need to exist as a good human being.
Examples of character values include: integrity, commitment, loyalty, positive attitude, and respect.
- Work Values
Work values are values that help you find what you want in a job and give you job satisfaction.
Examples of work values are: passion for the profession, public contact, prestige, and stability.
- Personal Values
Personal values are values that help you define what you want out of life and will assist you in being happy and fulfilled. They are the guiding principles of your life.
Examples of personal values are: family life, popularity, health, and appearance.
When you VALUE yourself, you won’t waste time listening to toxic co-workers ~ Linda Webb
Learn to ‘PIVOT’ from the naysayers that complain how bad the agency is. Learning to Pivot will add Value to you as a key employee that loves and cares about the profession and the agency.
Public Servants (police, fire, ems, corrections) are exposed to daily traumatic situations that will cause one to lose focus of their OWN PERSONAL VALUE. Repetitive cynical and negative thoughts will slowly deteriorate your own officer mental wellness. As your mental wellness depreciates so does your focus on what is important to you. It can even cloud your judgement on-the-job, forcing you to make bad decisions, and lead to ‘block-out syndrome’ where you could harm yourself or others.
As Officers we lose focus on personal value when we:
- Listen to Toxic co-workers
- Become entitled – the Entitlement Complex …. ‘It’s all about ME’
- Self-Sabotage through addiction – Alcohol, Bad Eating Habits, Financial Instability, Divorce
Here are (4) steps to Change and building VALUE
- Awareness – Be Cognizant that you need to make changes.
- Care Enough About it to make change
- Stop and Think – Make a plan to change
- Practice, Practice, Practice.
RITE Academy teaches these steps for building value, while providing ‘cognitive tools’ to help officers improve their mental health. RITE Academy has helped over 950 police agencies, with its 3-prong approach of
- Improving Personal Value
- Builds Department Morale
- Increases Community Trust
RITE Academy provides Professional Workplace VALUE Training that includes take away tools to help improve communication, and build morale. These RITE take away tools provide an accountability needed to reinforce the professional workplace culture, that the police executive can expect within the agency.
About RITE Officer Training – It starts with helping officers communicate with themselves, and the community more effectively. The RITE Ladder Tool teaches EI & SI that builds Career Value, improves Department morale, helps Professional workplace culture and reduces police misconduct to mitigate risk.
