The event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada.
The event is meant to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch, and other anti-crime efforts. The events are typically organized by block watches, non-for-profit organizations, companies, and police departments.
The overall objective of the this local event is to “give crime a going-away party” and to send the message of building a stronger, safer city. National Night Out is part of a larger community-wide outreach program sponsored by the Foundation to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs and strengthen the police-community partnership. Cities and towns from across the country are celebrating this great event with their communities.
